I've been wondering the same thing.
http://www.snakeriver4x4.com/ sells a repro M37 bed mounted spare tire bracket, which I put on my M37 and have been very pleased with. I will try to see if it would fit my M101. I am thinking it would require fabrication of a cross member for the "foot" of it.

My trailer was a generator model with a gas tank above the axle and filler neck on the right side of the bed. I gather from http://www.jedsite.info/trailers/trailers.html that the model is something other than M101, but seems to be the same box, frame, etc, other than a leg on the center rear which keeps the trailer from pivoting on its wheels when disconnected from the truck.

I've strapped a spare on the Y portion of the tongue, but find that the tongue weight is increased to the point that I have to use a Hi-Lift jack to lift it up to the level of the truck hitch. Also, the pintle will allow the trailer to pivot so violently on rough roads that on one occasion the new motorcycle tie-down straps actually broke in half, allowing my spare to launch out into the woods (thanks again for the recovery BZ!) Even with a steel mount, I think I would also strap it to each side.
