Trailer Winch

I am going to mount a winch on the front of my trailer. My thoughtwas to replace the little battery used for the break-away system with a full size deep cycle marine battery. My question is, the breakawat system has a little trickle charger to keep the battery up while driving. Will that charger work on a full sized battery, or is there a better way to keep the battery charged. I suppose the simplest would be to just throw it on the charger before using it.
