General Info on the R2:
USAF R2 Crash Truck (full, official title: Truck, Fire, Airplane, Forcible Entry, Type R-2).

Total production of the R-2 was 308 units with 4 prototypes (312 total). Contract with ACF-Brill was number 22397 and utilized government supplied chasis (M56). ACF is American Car and Foundry (builder of tanks, railroad cars, etc.) with the Brill subsidiary speciallizing in trolleys and buses. Oneida Products (the silversmiths) Conastota Division built the aluminum bodies...

The chasis (M56) was built by Dodge in 1953 under contract 11939.

Onboard foam unit was powered by compressed nitrogen to provide pathway for rescue crew to get to a downed aircraft in order to rescue/retrieve the flight crew, the rear PTO shaft was used to run a Homlite chain-driven 230 volt three phase generator used to power a saw and lights... Winch on front had a grapling hook in place of the stock hook. Body had a lot of compartments with exterior doors for tool storage, ladder was in a rack on the inside of the box which had a square, slanted bumped out section that extended over the cab area to contain the ladder overhead giving the truck a very unique shape.

The idea of the R-2 was to use it with foam trucks that would provide a path to a burning plane, and then the R-2 provided the equipment to access the interior of the plane and retrieve/rescue the crew...

I'd love to have a list of all the equipement that was in the truck...
