Hi Tim, I have several trucks with the NP420 transmission. I have noticed that some have 1st gear closer to the dash than others. I think it is in the angle of the shift stick. Yes, 1st & 3rd are very close together in a transmission that is not excessively worn. Hope this helps you answer your question.
