Nickel Nyrod works best in most cast iron crack repairs. The secret for a permanent repair is to preheat, don't turn it red.Weld about a QUARTER INCH at a time, stop PEEN lightly, weld quarter inch again, and so on. If the crack is long, work the area back and forth, don't run the weld continuous. Keep the area hot. When your finished, wrap the part in a welder's heat blanket,if you don't have one, pile WARM sand or dirt over the part.Remove when completely cool.
I've repaired diesel engine blocks that have thrown rod holes in them.Even using a different cast piece for the patch, and have been successful on permanent repairs.
