Here are some picture of a rear axle from a WM300 type PW, but the basic idea is the same.
Look here to see the axle shaft, and axle housing:

Note how the end of the axle shaft is splined, and the small side facing gears in the carrier have splines.
These teo parts have to fit into each other, or you will not be able to get the energy from the carrier into the axle shaft.
