Jim,

Even when new, those teeth are rounded off on one end (the end that slides into mesh with the teeth on the mating gear). They do this at the factory, presumably to help the gears mesh. In a tranny that has some miles on it, those rounded edges get dinged and chipped a little, to the point where you can't tell that they were rounded from the factory to begin with. Then you might jump to the conclusion that their appearance is strictly due to severe wear. That's what I thought when I first tore apart my transmission. Then when I received my new and NOS gears, I saw that they had rounded edges to begin with.
