spur gear transmission

I have three FFPW spur gear transmissions opened up on my work bench. It looks like the edge of the gears where they slid into mesh slowly get used up. The effect is that the gears get narrower. Does anybody have a feeling for how narrow is too narrow?

Am I suppose to dress the edges where they are worn?
