{{I have a 1977 W200 auto, 4x4. The knob on the shift for 4WD high,low,2WD
high, low is missing. Does anyone know the patter. I really can't tell when trying them
out since I'm also having some transmission problems ( I think).
I'll accelerate but it seems like its straining to move.}}

If this has the original transfer case, it's full time four wheel drive and you don't have 2WD. These can be converted so it's possible that you have lock outs. If you don't have them, your shift pattern is all the way to the rear is 4WD high lock, one notch forward is 4WD high open (60% drive to the rear wheels and 40% to the front) the next notch is neutral, the next notch forward is 4WD low, and all the way forward is 4WD low lock. There should be a light on the dash to show when you are in lock mode on the transfer case.

If you have trouble getting it out of low lock, try backing up a bit so that the chain will unload in the T-case. The gearing is slightly higher in the front to keep the T-case from over running and also to keep the vehicle tracking straight. Your gears might be 3.55 to 1 in the rear and 3.54 in the front.

One thing to try if it feels like it doesn't want to pull is to make sure the fluid is full but not over full. Slip the transmission into neutral and let it idle for a minute or two. The Chrysler Torqueflite is a great transmission but if the front bushing is worn a bit, when the vehicle sits for a long period of time, it will allow the fluid to seep down out of the torque converter and the valve body. When you slip it into neutral it will upump up really quick.

If the fluid is really dark, it may be burnt and the tranny might be toast. Try the neutral bit first.
