Just mentioning this in passing (again) but years ago I did see one at a little town just NW of Paris (the French one) which looked like a long WDX with a shrunk Carryall type body on it and a pickup bed at the rear.
Looked neat, except for the orange paint, wish I'd photographed it at the time as it didn't look home-made at all. I just didn't know they weren't common.......
