I have a 69 W300, 318 engine, close ratio NP435, 4.88 gears. This truck came with LT235-85R-16 Cooper mud and snow tires,mounted on the original 16" lockring wheels (duals) which look a little lost under this beast. I would like to loose some un-sprung weight (couldn't hurt) and loose some overall gearing. I have been thinking a set of late model, single piece wheels (to be able to go tubeless) with LT265's would be a step in the right direction, not sure about enough room between the duals. Does anyone have any thoughts on this setup?
Also, this truck came with a close ratio 4sp trans that I don't care for, its geared too fast for what I want. Unless I'm heading down hill, I have to take off in 1st gear, a real pain. I am looking for the regular, wide ratio, granny gear transmission for this 'ol heap. I would to start looking locally (hopefully) I'm located in n.e. CT.
