First off, what kind of gas are you using? A good choice would be argon/c02 mix. If you don't have that, then straight c02 will work. The porosity you are describing(small holes in surface of weld) could indicate that you have a lack of gas coverage. Flow meter should be set at 15-18 cfh. Also positioning weld tip too far from material will cause poor gas coverage. Should be around 1/4" from work. Mig welding works best indoors.
Next step would be to adjust heat(voltage)That you may have to guess at until you get experienced with proper amount of penetration. Some machines come with a chart. Next step would be, while you are welding on a practice piece, slowly adjust wirespeed with your free hand until a smooth crackling sound is heard. This should give you a good idea on where to start. try to push the gun, not pull. I hope this helps, good luck and have fun. If you need more info feel free to ask.
