The LA engine block is not narrower, the LA and Poly use the same basic external block casting, internally the LA block is lighter. The LA head is narrower at the top. The LA head tapers in as Terry said, the Poly head is "square" for lack of a better term, the head casting is more parallel. The Poly heads weight 30 lbs +/- more each, than the LA heads because their mass is much greater and the top of the Poly is wider at the valve cover. The canted valve design of the Poly spaces the valve train out a tad wider, about 1/2" as determined by the photos. The LA valves are in a narrow line. The 2" is from your own photo, with the tape measure sitting right there in the picture.
