You and I are on the same page with this as I agree almost entirely with this post. I use some of the same terminology, particlularly the "Man has a self inflated ego about our ability to both damage or fix our environment." I've been saying essentially this since dealing with all the "the sky is falling" yahoos I met while in college.

I don't believe *MOST* science is politicly driven. Goal perhaps. Curing a disease is a goal afterall. But science, as in research using the scientific method, is a self-governing process that keeps knowledge that is experimentally upheld and rejects/modifies that which is not. It's the best we've got when it comes to understanding our world. As time marches on, we gain more and more accurate knowledge based on observable(and repeatable) reality vs superstition, supposition, etc. Science is good, but is easily manipulated when the information is new and not fully understood(and this can be centuries or longer).

For every thousand scientists going about their work quietly, there are those few that crave the attention and spotlight and will find what they want in the data or make grandiose conclusions. A great aspect of the scientific method is that the "truth" will come out eventually, just not always on a time scale to most folks' liking.

In the end, through the proper use of the scientific method, "Junk Science" will be shown to be just that.

Ken
