Most often, the crud is a slice from the inside of rubber hose. It was sliced out when somebody slipped the hose over the end of a piece of steel line that they cut roughly when it was pinched or cracked from fatigue. You should only run STEEL lines on pressure side of pump, and only use rubber on appropriate fitttings. Steel lines are sold at all parts stores, and can be carefully hand bent to fit- buy 2 in case you kink one.
