Seems to me that the first thing to check on electrical on these older trucks is the grounds. Make sure the 'brain' module has a good bare metal ground. Check the plug-in connector and terminals for corrosion. A shot of WD40 can help minor corrosion.

The ignition module or brain is a voltage sensing device, so make sure the regulator is grounded and that it's putting out the right voltage, and that battery and alternator connections are clean.

Check that the ground strap between engine and chassis has a clean metal to metal connection.

I would check all the ignition wiring for tight and clean connections. That might be the problem with your tailights too.
