Actually the Euro and the Dolalr are / were pretty much level for a while there, but I can tell you Euros make travelling around Europe a lot easier, even for me, and if you are an American you know the price of anything as you just think of them as Dollars.
Anyway, numbers... I think they just amde them up with a stamp and battered them onto the frame as they went past, and that means that some of them were a lot fainter than others - when it got near going home time, maybe? There should be a seven or eight digit frame serial on the left front frame rail of any WC unless it's been ground off, but don't confuse it with the chassis part number which is normally stamped half way down the frame on the right chassis rail.
