This could be timing.......BUT it could also be a sign of vacuum leaks or else your idle adjusted to hi. I have had both cause "Dieseling" after shutting engine off. Also what will cause dieseling is 'hot spots' in the combustion chamber...after you shut the engine down, The carbon hot spots will be very hot, and act as makeshift 'spark plugs' to ignite the fuel. You may need to sometime down the road pull the heads and clean the combustion chambers. What year engine is this? Smog era engines, execially ones in the 80's are known for dieseling after they are shut down. As for timing, If you shut your engine down, timing will not have a thing to do with it.
