right, overlap. I was refering to valve overlap, when the exhaust is still slightly open while the intake has just slightly started to open. It disrupts the manifold vacume and makes for the roughness of a hot cam.

In fact, there was a way I saw in books and used once, to find true tdc (when no other marks avail). You temp set intake valve clearance to say .040 (each engine diff) and when tappet just touches top of valve stem, this is zero degrees on crank.

Chris, your comment on cross-over firing are interesting and I will test that in a Ford 292 I have access to. I noted there that the firing order didn't seem balanced, two adjacents firing, I don't know if a V8 can have a totally nice harmonic pattern, criss-crossing from one end of the crank to the other, back and forth. I was mostly into four cylinder foreigns, esp. Volvo. Now I love and depend on my 318 '63 w200.
