I had my 6-volt generator re-wound or re-magneted (or whatever it is) to put out 12 volts. The shop that did it also supplied the regulator. I bought a resistor to put in the gas gage wire at the dash, and a ballast resistor to put in the primary wiring for the ignition system (this saves the points, I've been told).
As you know, you'll have to change bulbs to 12-volt. I did mine about two years ago, and it's worked fine ever since, with about 3500 miles on it since then.
