I believe that you have this wrong. The intake valve opens on the downward non-firing stroke just after the exaust valve closes. If you timed you distibutor at this point as you suggest, it would put your distribuitor 180 out of wack. You need to time the distribuitor at the top of the compression stroke (both valves closed)You can tell the compression stroke as you will feel air coming out of the spark plug hole.
