I've been considering my first big truck purchase. I like the first generation trucks.

Tell me more about how the duals "save you". I was wondering how much dual rear wheels help stability when pulling a bumper hitch trailer. I would probably only tow about 8,000 lb 5 or 6 times a year. I don't need duals for weight carrying, but I might like them for stability if it makes a difference that way. I fear it is not worth the inconvenience during daily driving of having those extra wheels and fenders sticking out. I wish it was, because I think duals on the first generation Dodge Diesels look really cool.

I have always heard the leaf spring trucks ride really rough. Are the 1-tons worse thant the 3/4-tons? Are the first gen 2WD trucks smoother than the 4WDs? Which has more problems with component failure- ball joint vs. spring shackles, etc.?
