Take valve cover off and turn crank by hand until #1 exhaust valve closes (up) and #1 intake JUST starts to open (down)(rocker just touches valve stem top).
This verifies that #1 is firing (and not at other side of cycle (exhaust stroke)). Distributor may be one tooth off, get it so points can just open and rotor actually points to #1 cap wire.
Intake valves start opening usually a few degrees before top dead center.
