Remove all plugs, turn engine by hand with a socket and breaker bar {requires a helper], turning it in the direction of operation. Keep a thumb over the number one plug hole. Really equipped folks have a fitting, a hose, and a whistle. When it tries to push your thumb off, that tells you that the compression stroke is underway. As Norm said, watching the valves will tell you that, too.

Get it to top dead center of that stroke. Install the distributor so the points are just breaking, and the rotor is pointing to the number one terminal in the cap.
