Research the abandoned personal property laws and the motor vehicle title laws in your state to see if they provide an answer. Look at DMV rules and regulations for guidance. If they do not provide you with a clear path to follow, consult an attorney for advice. It will be money well spent to do it once and get right, because you face further liability if you don't do it right by the books. Abandoned property may become state owned property to be liquidated and the proceeds held in trust until an owner or heir files a claim.

In any event, follow the applicable laws and procedures in your state and do it right. Don't follow specific or general ("...I think..") advice on this Forum because it likely differs from the specific requirements of your state's laws and procedures. A lawyer can help determine what you must do and steps you must take if you can't figure it out on your own.
