They add aluminum to steel that will be formed into complex shapes. The downside is that it tends to rust away extremely quickly. Sorta like cheap exhaust pipes that are 'killed' and last 1 year- you know, the stuff sold with 'lifetime gaurantee' mufflers. Then in a year the muffler replacement is free, but you gotta pay for the new pipes?

But I think in today's CNC world, new windshields could be milled out of aluminum, then have the center bent...or maybe aluminum extrusion, bent into shape?
