An ammeter will only show current flow...it will not give you any indication of your battery's condition, thus, I always install a voltmeter as it will show actual battery voltage, plus when the charging system is working, it will show charge voltage going to the battery! As for your question, yes, you hook the smaller lead (through the ignition switch or a relay) to control the charging system, on a power wagon, you will need either a two pole ignition switch (marked 'ign-1' & 'ign-2' thus you can seperate the alternator lead from the coil lead, otherwise when you turn the key 'off' the truck will continue to run as the alternator will be providing enough voltage to keep the coil on!! An easier way to do this is to buy a 'horn relay' at the parts house and wire it in so it's coil is connected with the spark coil off the ignition switch, and the relay connected to switch the 12V on and off to the alternator.
