I will pipe in on the cheaper end.
I bought a Craftsman professional mig welders. It is a 110v unit. Has infinite power and wire feed control. I have welded up to 16 gauge w/o a problem. I am running a CO2/Argon mix.
This welder has done me good for just working on sheetmetal and body work. I haven't done anything heavier but for the moment it will be just fine.

It all really depends on what you are doing, how much space you have and what your end results are going to be. I started out in a garage that was a single car garage. I was doing a full frame off restoration. There is no way I could have a big welder to drag around when I only had 14" between walls and body.

For heavier welding I do have a 250amp stick welder which is a miller. I would have gotten the low end miller wire feed but it was almost twice the Sears one and I just couldn't justify it at the time. Eventually I will probably get a higher quality mig but part of me really wants to get a Tig first ;o)
