Actually as I understand it, the fitting on the side of the oil filler pipe is actually supposed to connect to the fitting on the side of the Carter E7S1 carburetor, or to a nipple on the oil bath air cleaner.

What you have is a shortcut to allow filtered air down the oil filler pipe. Both work. Its all part of the PCV system. Air is drawn in from the air cleaner, or a clean air source, down the oil filler pipe, through the crankcase, out the passenger side below the manifold near the firewall, up through the PCV metering valve then exhausted through the exhaust manifold.

I would say you just have a modified system that elimates plumbing over the head. Just keep the filter clean because the fan constantly stirs up ground dirt to dust up the engine compartment.
