I had a 6.2 diesel in my 83 GMC van. It did have 180000 miles on it. It was tired when I got rid of it. That was the biggest piece of crap engine I have ever seen in my life. It left me stranded more then once. One little module goes out of it and its stone cold dead in the water. Everytime I shut it off it was a flip of the coin as to if it would start the next time. When it did run it got good MPG. Probably about 20mpg. Wasnt to bad empty but loaded it was a dog bad on power.

Only cool thing about the 6.2 was you could smoke someone out at will. Slide it into neutral and stick it to the floor and BLACK!!!!!

It was loud and vibrated the entire van something terrible. It would eat alternator belts if if saw any long highway driving. Could not get the belt tight enouugh no matter what. The starter bolts had stripped out on many occasions. Finally broke the starter housing one time. Helicoil every few years. Could not figure that one out. Would not start without glow plugs even in July. The glow plug module went out in July and wouldnt start. If you didnt plug it in during winter it wouldnt start.

In the injection pump was a diaphram of some sort that started to flake off and would plug some check valve. When this happened it was stone cold dead. Ended up punching out the check valve so it was a straight shot back into the return line to the tank. Rebuilt injection pumps had some encapsulted diaphram so this didnt happen anymore.

That sucker needed every last zap and volt of 2 900amp batterys to turn over. The cabling system seemed piss poor in my opinion for the dual batterys. I fought that all the time.

It left me stranded I dont know how many times. It got towed home a lot and to the shop a lot too! I only paid 150$ for it. Drove it 5 years and then supposedly got a 2000$ trade in on it when I bought my 95 Ram brand new. I still do miss the old GMC cargo van. I wish I had kept it as I could use it for a shed now!
