It sounds to me like somebody reliable should get into the rubber auto parts business, maybe just specializing in small runs of "antique" items. I don't know who VPW buys from, but maybe their shops are busy making 100,000 of one thing for some big manufacturer and they're not hungry enough to care about a small order. I can't imagine the equipment required is any more expensive than you'd need for a decent modern machine shop. If everybody in the business is so flaky, once a good shop gets a reputation for turning out small orders of good-quality parts on time, they should be able to quickly take all that business away from the less-reliable shops.
