I don't know about Cal., but here (OREGON) you have the option of putting a stem wall (concrete blocks will do) around the parimeter, and foundation (tapered concrete) blocks under the joists/posts. It's easier and cheaper than the full slab. You'll have to find out if it's an option there. I'd even have to check here to see if what I say is valid or outdated info. Good luck.
