This past weekend I had a suspect clicking in the rear end of the '60 W300 while moving the truck a few short miles. Low and behold a ring gear bolt punched through the inspection cover and dripping gear oil. This is the exact problem I had with my '59 W200 which has a 70 rear end a couple years ago.
The fix was drilling the ring bolt heads and safety wire pairs together. There are no locking provisions on these rear ends from the factory and apparently something that needs to be checked out. The '60 has only 35k original miles. If you catch it early (as I did in both cases) you can avoid more serious damage.
Has anyone else had this problem of ring gear bolts loosening up on 70's?
