....except for the high performance parts that I picked up from Mopar Performance, or other sources, all the rings, bearings, valves, gaskets and fittings etc. were in stock, or a one day wait, from NAPA.
No mistake about it, the LA is a good motor, but it is based upon the Poly block, just a lighter version of the same casting, and the Poly breathes as well as motor ever designed, including the Hemi. In fact some will claim that the Poly breathes better than the Hemi. Because the series 1-2 Poly has mechanical valves it requires more attention, but for the same reason it has a lot more torque and HP. The HP is not that big of a deal in a PW, but that torque is perfect for off road grunt at low speed.
One thing I found interesting, my Poly had a lot of top end wear after 44 years (poor maintenance and no oil changes for 14 years), so I installed a new oil pump. I had a choice of the standard LA pump or the high performance pump from Mopar Performance. I chose the later, which turned out to be the stock Poly pump!
The Poly has a forged crank, the LA does not, it is cast unless you have an industrial LA.
Good luck with your decision!
