Gary,
The oil goes in to the filter from the engine at the top on the side. It filters through the sock and returns to the engine through the hole in the side of the "t" handle at the very top of the cannister, goes through the tube to the bottom and out to the engine. I'm not positive of this but I know from my manual that the oil enters the filter at the side top hole. The manual also states the oil returns to the engine at the bottom. I'm assuming the rest.
