The arrow was actually fired from a custom built air rifle. This gun is rented out mostly for westerns. There is a gun that shoots one arrow at a time, there are other guns designed for shooting two or even three arrows at a time.

I became friends with one of the prop people and according to him, for westerns, the subject first puts a 12 inch square one inch thick slab of wood under their cloths. They are shot from a range of 6 to 10 feet. The prop guys often draw little targets on the wood and then bet as to how close they can come to the bulls eye.

In the case of the Gremlin, the driver had to get the acting right in only two takes, because there were only two tires to use, the original and the spare tire. The tire were shot from aprox 10 feet using the gun. This was the last scene of the day and I was freezing to death.

The other interesting fact that comes to mind is that the trees you see being cut down were actually brought up to the forest that morning. Since it was filmed in a national forest, tree felling is a no no.
