Sounds a little odd to me. I wouldn't think there would be that much drag just due to a seal being installed. Have you had any of the bearing caps off and then reinstalled since the last time you were able to turn the crank by hand. I seem to remember that I was able to turn my crank by hand without too much effort, even with the seal in place. After I installed the pistons and rings, it was a different story.
