I spent the 3rd and the 4th swapping out the tranny in my M35. It blew out halfway up the Pine Canyon grade from Orondo to Waterville on hwy 2. That grade gains 2000 feet in 7 miles, and I had 31,000 lbs in the truck and trailer. I knew it would be a hard pull, and I was doing 18 mph in 3rd gear when she blew. Luckily, first gear still worked a little bit and I managed to crawl all the way to the top at about 3 mph and then roll down into Waterville, by which time even 1st gear was almost gone. Also luckily, I had a spare tranny in Wallace, Idaho and a friend who was willing to come and get me, go back and get the tranny, and sit around while I swapped it. The Spicer 3053 is not a lightweight gearbox, and the clearances are such that it has to be jockeyed around a lot to get it in place, but at least I had a good spare and the weather was good. Now I'd better go find another spare.
