Answer - they are the same animal, just depends on the location you happen to be in.
Here in California, we had another attack over the weekend. The mountain lions are being stressed by a long drought and encroachment of their hunting areas. The one that attacked the hiker last week was reported to be in poor health. A last desparate act of a normally shy beast. I would not hike alone in mountain lion areas these days.
On the other hand, bears are everywhere. It is now considered normal to have your car and coolers torn apart by bears if you go to some camping areas in California. I don't know how they would do against the powerwagon, but I am sure not going to find out.
