use the impact socket (the one you described above) but go to sears and get a drag link socket that fits the slot. they have one that is almost a perfect fit. grind the edges of the socket to fit the screw head and a few taps later they are out with no damage. bob stahl showed me that one. you'll need the tool more than once so its worth buying if you are into dodges.
