Why a canvas top ? The answer is simple. It cost too much to make a die to create the steel roof. That and the number of presses available to create a roof that size was very limited.
Read a few books on coach building from back then and you will get the basic idea. Do not forget that the die would have to create the whole roof and not fust the open section where the canvas is. There is much to much welding and lead work for the company to have just filled in the hole.
If you want a steel roof go to a van conversion shop and get the roof section they cut out when creating a pop up or raised roof camper.
There is a stack of ways to add the metal roof depending on your pocket book or talents.
