Gordon has it right. The auto industry at that time was not noted for innovation. In fact they resisted change. Look at the Tucker story. His car was killed by the stoggy auto industry as they did not want to change.

The roof of the carryall is actually quite simple and I kind of like it. It is basically 4 pieces. The sides, rear and front with the front being the only more modern piece. This design has no side/roof seam that is often a problem in newer vehicles. However you will have a seam someplace. On the carryall it is below the windows. I simply welded up this seam and it now looks exactly like the "seams" in the door (the seam on my truck was flexed and was leaking).

I did not put a steel top in mine as I did not want to fight a compound curve to make it look orignial. I put some new plastic spacers on the bows and topped that with 1/8" oak plywood then a layer of 1/8" closed cell foam then vinal roof materal. I sealed and glued each layer then put in the rubber seal strip that is available from VPW. I have not had any water issues to date.
