Ignition problems

I am wroking on my ignition still and I am having problems getting spark. I turn the key on and check everything and it will light up my test light. When the coil is not hooked up I have a bright light everywhere there should be power. When I hook up the coil to power my test light drowns out really bad at the coil and on the coil side of the resistor (what ever the two prong thing is called). Even with less than steller power my coil will not give out any kind of spark. Does anyone have any ideas?
