That is OK as long as both units are rigid mounted, straite in line or can move together evenly. Problems could acure if one can move some away or up needing the shaft to legnthen from the other a little (flexing). With out a slip joint the strain tring to hold them the same distance would be put on the bearings or universal Caps in a way they were not designed to work and soon destroy or damage them. That is why you see rubber pads used on a lot of shafts when there is no slip joint used. Mark H.
