When WWII was over and Grandpa was released from the Navy, he drove Grandma and my infant father home to Missouri from Los Angeles in a '37 Pontiac. They only made it out to Needles when the points broke. He taped them together with a match stick.

Then there was the time he broke a piston in a '39 Willys on a trip home from South Dakota. He pulled that rod and piston out of the motor, shoved a wood block and a rag in the empty cylinder, and drove home to Missouri.

For a couple years after the war, they had a hard time finding work and moved around a bit. It was not uncommon for them to move the home built trailer they live in behind one of these cars.
