While Tim's poltergeist theory is interesting, and may indeed have merit, may I suggest a slightly more, shall we say, conventional approach?
The next time it happens, try this:
CAREFULLY, so as not to disturb the poltergeist...er, I mean, condition, use a meter, or test lamp, and work your way back through the brake light circuit, from lamps to switch, to 4-way flasher, turn signal circuits, fuse, etc.
You may find that the switch is bad, or you may find some other fault.
