transfer case question

I know I ask a few questions on here and I appriciate the answers that you guys give. I have another question. I am rebuilding the single speed transfer case on my 1942 wc. When you press out the bearing cups and press in new ones, how do you know how far to press them in. I know that you use shims on the case for final shimming but do you press the cups in with the retainers and shims in place and stop when you make contact or do you get it close and shim the rest
