Well, first of all, sorry to hear about President Reagan - he did the job and better than many people thought he would - even Margaret Thatcher liked him and that's a dificult feat.

Second, it's the sixtieth anniversary of D-Day, and that shouldn't go unremarked - if for no other reason than Dodges were there in quantity are really played their part. Political correctness apart we have to remember that a lot of people didn't survive that day. American, British, Canadian, New Zealanders, German, and probably a whole host of other countries too, especially then-Commonwealth ones such as South Africa, Rhodesia, and the like.

Not wanting to juggle words, I'll just copy and paste an (edited) quote from Bob Potter or Wilmington, that he posted over on Maple Leaf up;

-------------------------------

In my European history class this past week I played both "Lili Marlene" by Marlene Dietrich and the Waramps video version of the "D-Day Dodgers."

To convince you that there is hope in this new generation, I flung down the proverbial gauntlet to this class. Week before last I explained the origins of our Memorial Day holiday and dared them to go to the cemetery nearest to their house and lay one flower on one grave. One young lady bought three dozen roses and so marked 36 graves in her cemetery -- World War I, WWII, and Korean vets. Another went to the Finns Point National Cemetery in New Jersey and marked not only Confederates who died at Fort Delaware but also a few German POW graves. Her logic? "The Germans have no family here to remember them."

We may be in good hands after all . . . .
