Something I learned as a lad driving tractors on the ranch was to use the natural tendency of a vehicle to wander to your advantage when steering. When you want to go left, hold some pressure on the wheel in that direction, and then when the tires hit a bump or otherwise turned that direction slightly, the pressure on the steering wheel would push the tires in that direction much easier. This should only be done at very slow speeds, your steering effort at higher speeds will be much easier anyway.
