re-wiring

What is the best way to rewire a '47 PW? Is a wiring harness neccessary? I have been told to run the new wiring by the old stuff, hook it up, and then take out the old, I have also been told I should color code it. What is the right guage and type of wire that should be used?
If I wanted to make the starter run on a pushbutton relay instead of the foot start what would be the best switch and how could I hook it up to that big positive battery cable that goes directly there. (I though I could jam the switch so its always on and then install a relay switch to control the current flow?
And last but not least, on a 12v. conversion I have notice people saying that there is a good chance of burning out the gas guage, wouldn't it be resonable to simply install a 12v.-6v. resister unit to the guages just like one would to the coil?
thanks,
Drew
